Ysterplaat started with a Echo house in the beginning of 2018. Living in community can sometimes lead to the most seemingly impossible ideas to come alive, and short after the house opened, the residents in the house worked together to start the Echo Kids aftercare in Ysterplaat. When you jump off the stage, where the Ysterplaat rooms are, you land on an large usually unused hall. This is where the aftercare runs every week day between 14:00 and 17:30. 15 of the most vulnerable kids between grade 4 and grade 7, as identified by the Ysterplaat Primary school, comes after school to have a nutritious meal and do their homework, where volunteers (also some of the residents in the house), help the kids to better in the fields they struggle with. Currently we still rely on the help of volunteers, but would also like to empower people from the community to run it. On Thursday evenings between 30-40 people from the community, as well as the kids, share a meal around the table. We believe that community is the one thing that can help us to move closer to each other, celebrate out differences and where we can be honest about or joy's and struggles.
